How CIPHER counts
Method
Rigor does not require solemnity. It does require labels. Every public number was recomputed from an exact string, a specified system, and visible normalization.

A mark can participate in writing and in counting. Those are two offices. CIPHER names the second without erasing the first.
The number is hard.
Arithmetic either holds or it does not. If an earlier house record was wrong, it is corrected and, where useful, kept as a miss.

A total does not decide what a word is for. Curiosity may open search. It may not choose the answer.
Calculation is not interpretation.
The engine is local, deterministic, versioned. It does not score destiny.
A match is not a mechanism.
Same number does not mean same thing. Greek is not Hebrew. Ancient is not modern.
Source it first. Then smile.
Word before performance. Independent-first is a discovery story, not a proof.
A miss is the method working.
Failed verifications stay in the ledger. Trust rises when the site can say no.
Each 42 is an invitation
QUESTION
Deep Thought gave an answer without knowing what had been asked. CIPHER files the joke. Then it asks again.
Adams gave 42 as the Answer. The English word QUESTION reverse-reduces to 42. 42 + 42 = 84. LOVE IS THE ANSWER reverse-reduces to 84. ANSWER, the letters, is 37. Typical. The joke, counted.
What are we supposed to ask here?
Not “does this prove 42?” A total cannot answer that. The number is hard. The meaning is open. Each 42 is an invitation to a better question: was the word already important? Which face? Which language? What did we have to ignore to make the door look open?
Those questions live in the lab. The Meaning of Life, next door, keeps the larger one: what is the question? CIPHER’s office is narrower. Words become numbers. Then what?

Arabic صفر, ṣifr, empty, zero, is the etymon of cipher. CIPHER does not run Arabic abjad. The emptiness is shown, not totalled. French chiffre, Italian cifra, German Ziffer: later Latin letters, no house seal. The British spelling CYPHER reverse-reduces to 24. A spelling, not a language.
The names of the machines do not agree. QUESTION does. That is ridiculous. It is also the invitation.
What the roads taught
Each 42 is an invitation
The Hero’s Journey asked CIPHER to run four English faces on the names of its roads. Road names mostly miss. Gilgamesh, Orpheus, Eurydice, Ovid, Tomis, Camino, Shackleton, Endurance, Sunjata, Moses, Exodus, Buddha, Gotama: no 24, no 42. That is the method working.
Two winks earned a plate. ITHACA, the name of a road, is ordinal 42 and reduction 24. ENHEDUANNA, the poet bound to a road, is 42 on one face: full reduction. The goddess of that road, INANNA, misses.
The remaining 42s arrived on reverse reduction, the easy door: ISHTAR, HUMBABA, PILGRIM. Types, later names, a monster in the story. QUESTION uses that same door. So the better question is not “how many 42s?” It is: which word was already the road, and which word did we try because we had a machine?
