Isopsephy

Equal pebbles. ἴσος and ψῆφος. Letters that already counted as numbers, then words that could be made to count as one another.

Who used it

From the Hellenistic period onward, Greek letters carried numerical values in the Milesian (Ionian) system. Accounts, inscriptions, and literary play all used that mapping. Isopsephy is the practice of treating a word’s letter-sum as a number that might equal another word’s sum.

It could be a joke. It could be a dedication. It could be a poet showing off. It could later become a tool of interpretation. Those uses are not one thing.

How the mapping works

Units, tens, hundreds. Alpha is 1. Iota is 10. Rho is 100. Omega is 800. Three older letters remain in the numeral row: stigma 6, qoppa 90, sampi 900.

Stigma Ϛ = 6, qoppa Ϙ = 90, sampi Ϡ = 900. Final sigma ς takes Σ = 200. A grid is a mapping, not a transmission claim.

Leonides, and play

Leonides of Alexandria, in the first century, wrote isopsephic epigrams preserved in the Greek Anthology: poems whose lines, or whose whole, are built to share a numerical total. That is craft. It is not a claim that every Greek word was secretly a code.

Do not reduce the tradition to mystical fortune-telling. Greeks could count, dedicate, pun, and interpret. Keep those offices distinct.

Greek isopsephy

A Greek word, a Milesian mapping, a sum. Historical as a practice. A modern calculation that uses the mapping is not automatically an ancient reading.

Not this tradition

Hebrew gematria

A different alphabet, a different history, a different set of later uses. Same kind of operation, letters as numbers, is not the same culture. See Hebrew gematria.

Proximity is not transmission. The calculator may compare totals. The histories stay separate.

A name, counted later

Isis is an Egyptian goddess. The 420 below is not Egyptian. It is the Greek spelling under Greek numerals.

The Greek name-form Ἶσις, with its breathing and accents still visible, normalizes for counting to ΙΣΙΣ. Breathings do not add value. Sigma is 200 whether medial or final.

A calculation that uses an ancient mapping is not automatically an ancient interpretation.
