He sat at his desk, stared into the garden, and typed an ordinary small number. End of story. 24 would also have done. He did not pick 24.
In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 42 is the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.6 Deep Thought spends seven and a half million years on it. The joke is that the Answer arrives without the Question, and that the number is stubbornly plain.
On 3 November 1993, in a Usenet post to alt.fan.douglas-adams, Adams said he had sat at his desk, stared into the garden, and thought “42 will do.” He typed it out. End of story. He wanted an ordinary small number. Brief quotation only; the post is the source, not a brand kit.1
24 would also have done. He did not pick 24. CIPHER is not going to pretend he did. It is going to count the towels anyway.
Someone put it there. That is different from someone finding it there. CIPHER keeps designed 42s in their own register so they cannot impersonate discoveries, and so discoveries cannot hide behind the joke.
His name does not lock. DOUGLAS ADAMS is not 42 under the English faces. GUIDE is not 42 either. We checked. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy would have mentioned it, in small type, under Disappointments, Galactic.

Another 42.
The hitchhiker’s other instruction
DON’T
PANIC
If 42 is the Answer, 24 is the kit. A towel. Some mice. Twenty-four hours in which not to panic. CIPHER is not a survival guide. It just keeps counting, which is a kind of not panicking.
Reverse reduction 24. The most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have, counted under a modern machine the hitchhiker was not using. Keep your towel. Label your cipher.
In the fiction, white mice are pan-dimensional beings who had the Earth built to find the Question. Reverse reduction of MICE is 24. They remain, as ever, unimpressed.
Same word. Different machines.

MODERN
6 + 9 + 1 + 8
24
The frames match on purpose. Neither result is dressed as the interesting one. A total without a face is a smear.
FISH is 42 | 24 on the same two English faces as Ithaca. The Babel Fish translates any language, which would have saved a lot of gematria arguments and spoiled the museum. A fish is not a homecoming. Same machines. Different joke. Leave them beside each other as a question.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy gives the Heart of Gold an Infinite Improbability Drive. CIPHER counted the shorter name first, because that is what people say. Faces first. The article is not optional.
THE IMPROBABILITY DRIVE is 242 in English ordinal. Drop THE and IMPROBABILITY DRIVE is 209. INFINITE IMPROBABILITY DRIVE does not lock on the four English faces. The 242 lives on the string that includes the article.
FORTY TWO, spelled out, is 142 in ordinal. The name of the designed number is another seal. Number-search. Adams did not have to mean that. Typical.
Designed
Adams chose 42 because it would do. Ordinary. Stubborn. Later enormous. This one is designed.
Found
The computer’s name, counted later, is 42 under reverse reduction. Number-search. A wink. Not a second Deep Thought hiding in the arithmetic.
The joke, counted
Deep Thought gave an Answer without a Question. Adams typed 42 because it would do. CIPHER later counted the English word QUESTION. Reverse reduction 42. The missing office is the same ordinary small number. Typical.

QUESTION
42
Q 1 + U 6 + E 4 + S 8 + T 7 + I 9 + O 3 + N 4. A modern English face. Not Homeric. Not designed by Adams.
Designed · the garden
ANSWER
42
The number he typed. Not a letter-sum of the English word ANSWER, which reverse-reduces to 37. We checked.
Derived arithmetic
42 + 42
84
A third operation. Not a cipher of ANSWER. The universe is under no obligation to be neat.
Then the phrase already walking the Book lands on 84 under reverse reduction. Love is the Answer, counted later. 42 + 42 = 84 is addition. LOVE IS THE ANSWER is a sentence. Hold them beside each other as a question, which is also 42.
Adams gave permission to laugh. He did not give permission to skip the method. The Answer is designed. The Question is found. Love is the Answer is a wink. ANSWER, the letters, missed.
People start seeing it. They start counting toward it. They start designing more of it. They start counting 24 as well, because once you have a machine you will run it on towels. The lab next door asks how surprising a hit is once many doors have been tried. Adams gives permission to laugh. He does not give permission to skip the method.

Roadster on Falcon Heavy. A towel. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in the glove box. Homage. Designed.

Starship. Someone put that 42 there.

the prophecy
Starship V4. Stack of forty-two, “as foretold.” Designed reception.
CIPHER files them as designed reception of Adams’s ordinary small number. They do not make the garden less of a garden.
English reverse reduction
42
T 7 + W 4 + E 4 + N 4 + T 7 + Y 2 + T 7 + W 4 + O 3 = 42. The name of twenty-two opens. Typical.
English reverse reduction
49
T 7 + W 4 + E 4 + N 4 + T 7 + Y 2 + F 3 + O 3 + U 6 + R 9 = 49. Twenty-four, spelled out, does not. That is the whole joke, still working.
A question next door
MythEngine asked whether life is a myth or a game. CIPHER can count the words. It cannot answer the question.
English reverse · 42
42
M 14 + Y 2 + T 7 + H 19 = 42. The word already existed. The 42 is found. A wink, not a verdict.
English reverse · not 42
82
Reverse 82. G 20 + A 26 + M 14 + E 22 = 82. We checked. It does not lock. That is the method working.
Isis is a myth that already has an office here: Egyptian tradition, Greek name-form, 420. That is not Adams. Do not glue them. MYTHENGINE, the project name, reverse-reduces to 42. Number-search on a project that already had a job.
This one is designed.
The towel is found.
Filed, not answered
One blank field. The desk already exists.
