Gematria

Hebrew letters serve as numerals. That fact is old. Gematria as a named way of reading is later, and layered. Those two sentences must both stay true.

What this is

In Hebrew, letters count. Alef is 1. Yod is 10. Qof is 100. Tav is 400. The ordinary absolute value, mispar hechrachi, is the mapping CIPHER runs at launch. Final forms ך ם ן ף ץ keep the regular values in this system.

Gematria as interpretation, reading a word’s sum as significant, or as equivalent to another word, appears in rabbinic literature. The Baraita of 32 Rules, attributed to R. Eliezer son of R. Jose the Galilean, names gematria as rule 29. A classic illustration is Eliezer = 318 beside Genesis 14:14. That is a rabbinic hermeneutic, not a proof that every later proposed reading was planted by biblical authors.

Later Kabbalistic and modern uses are further layers. Chronology is contested in places. CIPHER does not pretend to settle it. It refuses to flatten it.

Final forms ך ם ן ף ץ keep the regular values 20 40 50 80 90 in this system. Niqqud is stripped. This is a mapping, not a claim that every later reading was intended by biblical authors.

Original language first

If the term is Hebrew, show Hebrew. An English transliteration run through an English cipher is not gematria. A Latin mapping that borrows Hebrew place-values and skips J is labeled here as project-specific and not Jewish.

Do not present Jewish tradition as an exotic cipher machine. It is a language, a scripture, and a set of reading practices with their own dignity.

Hebrew

Gematria

Original strings. Niqqud stripped after being shown. Finals as regular values in hechrachi. Interpretive use is later and particular.

Not Hebrew

Hebrew-style Latin

A modern Latin mapping used on some calculators. CIPHER will run it if you ask, and will refuse to call it Jewish. See English systems.

Same kind of operation (letters become numbers) is not the same tradition.

A Hebrew word that happens to be 420

עשן, smoke. 70 + 300 + 50. Same total as Greek Ἶσις. Same number does not mean same thing.

עשן

Authentic Hebrew arithmetic on an original string. The coincidence with Isis is a coincidence of totals, not an identity of meaning.

Then we counted the English name

The word already lived here

History first.
Then the cipher. A later English spelling under a modern reverse machine. That is not Hebrew.

GEMATRIA

Apparently.

English reverse · 142

GEMATRIA

142

G 20 + E 22 + M 14 + A 26 + T 7 + R 9 + I 18 + A 26. The name of the practice, counted later.

Hebrew hechrachi · 277

גימטריה

277

ג 3 + י 10 + מ 40 + ט 9 + ר 200 + י 10 + ה 5 = 277

The Hebrew name does not inherit 142.

Same English letters in the mouth are not the Hebrew name. The 142 does not travel.

What This Does Not Prove

That gematria is 142 in gematria. That a rabbinic rule encoded English. That Greek γεωμετρία, the likely etymon, is this 142.

That GEMATRIA, FORTY TWO, and ELON REEVE are one object because they share a total. The correspondence is hard as arithmetic and open as meaning. Word first.

Do not claim ancient biblical authors encoded every later gematria pattern.

Notes

  1. An index coincidence. Strong’s numbers index lemmas, not gematria. If a Strong’s stamp happens to be 420, see Misses.
  2. G 20 + E 22 + M 14 + A 26 + T 7 + R 9 + I 18 + A 26 = 142. English reverse on GEMATRIA. Not Hebrew.
  3. The number is in the verse. Genesis 14:14 names 318; the gematria reading is a later hermeneutic placed beside it.
  4. גימטריה is 277 in mispar hechrachi. The Hebrew name does not inherit 142. Greek γεωμετρία is another string again.
  5. Regular values. Traditional mispar hechrachi: א=1 … ת=400. Final letters take regular values in this launch system.
  6. Rule 29. Baraita of 32 Rules (attributed to R. Eliezer b. R. Jose the Galilean) names gematria. The 318 / Eliezer illustration is the textbook case, not a license for every later proposal.
