He had to be recognized
Odysseus left a small island for a war that ate ten years, then a return that ate ten more. Storms, hosts, a cave, a witch, the dead, the sea again. Penelope kept the house by unweaving it. Telemachus grew into the question of whether a father still existed.
When the man came home he was not believed. A beggar in his own hall. The old nurse knew a scar. The dog knew a walk. The wife asked about a bed that could not be moved because it was a living tree. Recognition is the plot. The island is the name of that plot.
The Odyssey already needed a word for the home that has to be earned twice: once by surviving, once by being seen. That walking lives in The Hero’s Journey. CIPHER did not row the sea. Then we counted a later English spelling of the island’s name.

Ithaca, New York, sits near 42°26′ north. That is a coordinate. A namesake town. Not a landing, and not a letter-sum.
Adams chose 42 as an ordinary small number. That is a designed reception of the integer, dated 1993. It is not a logo for this island.
