English reduction
Each ordinal value is reduced to 1–9. A and J and S are all 1. That is a smaller machine. Hits become easier. That fact belongs in the method.
The commercial name “Pythagorean” is a modern numerology label. Ancient Pythagorean number philosophy is a different object. CIPHER will not perform the bait-and-switch.

A smaller machine. More doors open. That fact belongs in the method, not in a glow around a hit.
Same English spelling as the 42. Different face. I 9 + T 2 + H 8 + A 1 + C 3 + A 1.
Adams already wrote the motto. We counted it later. Apostrophes are stripped, so DON’T PANIC and DONT PANIC agree.

It changes what the door can support.
Notes
- A correction. TEXAS is 69 in ordinal, 15 in reduction. Prior notes that said “reduction 69” are withdrawn.
- Same machine, many doors. ITHACA reduction 24. DON’T PANIC, THE FIELD, ENDLESS LOVE, and MILLIWAYS: 42.
