English ordinal
MODERN
9 + 20 + 8 + 1 + 3 + 1
42
Modern · A=1 … Z=26
The simplest modern machine. Twenty-six letters, twenty-six numbers. Nothing older is smuggled in by using it.
Normalization: uppercase, keep A–Z, strip the rest. Digits already written in a title are not this cipher. If you add a written “42” to a letter-sum, that is composite arithmetic: label it.
Modern English alphabetic convention. Not Milesian. Not Hebrew. J is the tenth letter here. It is skipped in the Latin-Hebrew-style mapping.
The English spelling ITHACA, under this face. The walking of the poem lives elsewhere. Here we name the face and add the letters.
Same word. Different machines.

The frames match on purpose. Neither result is dressed as the interesting one. A total without a face is a smear.
The Odyssey did not encode English ordinal values.
