John Locke

A physician’s son, later a physician himself. Years in Holland as an exile. Then An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, 1690: not a slogan about a blank slate, a careful argument about ideas, experience, and the limits of what we can know.

Locke is not here because his name sums. He is here because in 1690 he made consciousness a working English word for the perception of what passes in a man’s own mind. A cipher does not interpret itself. Something notices. Consciousness is that noticing, named.

1690 is a title-page year. The digits contain 69. That is a date species, not a letter cipher. THE 69 YEARS opened on that question. CIPHER records the species and steps back.

Then, if we count the English name under reverse reduction, a modern machine Locke was not writing, the letters sum to 42.

Six centuries earlier, a Persian physician asked whether a soul knows itself without the body. In 1690 Locke named the noticing in English. A later public life has tried to expand the scope and scale of consciousness. CIPHER counted the later spellings. It did not walk their minds.

What This Does Not Prove

That Locke encoded 42. That 1690 was chosen for 69. That Avicenna’s Latin name was waiting for English ordinal.

That every consciousness page must wear the number. The correspondence is hard as arithmetic and open as meaning. Word first.
